How to Type Fractions
Unicode has single-character fractions for halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, sixths, eighths and a few more. Only ½, ¼ and ¾ have classic Alt codes; the rest need Unicode input or a picker.

Fractions Without a Ready-made Character
For a fraction that has no precomposed character (say 5/16), combine superscript digits, the fraction slash ⁄ (U+2044) and subscript digits: ⁵⁄₁₆. Most fonts render it as a compact fraction. In HTML you can also write 5⁄16.
In Word and Google Docs, the equation editor stacks any fraction: type 5/16 inside an equation and press Space.
Gotchas
- Excel turns 1/2 into a date. Type
0 1/2(zero, space, 1/2) to enter 0.5 displayed as a fraction, or format the cells as Fraction first. Use=UNICHAR(189)for the ½ character as text. - Searchability: ½ is one character, so a search for "1/2" won't find it. In recipes and data that people will search or copy into calculators, plain
1/2can be the more practical choice. - Screen readers generally read ½ as "one half", which is a point in favour of the real character in body text.
